Неозначені займенники (Indefinite pronouns)

Неозначені займенники (Indefinite pronouns)  – це займенники, які вказують на неконкретних осіб, місця чи речі. Приклади неозначених займенників в англійській мові є:  someone, anyone, everybody, no one, each, few, many, both, and several. Невизначені займенники можуть бути як в однині, так і в множині залежно від контексту, у якому вони з’являються. Наприклад:

• “Someone is in the waiting room” —  це однина, тоді як “Many people are in the waiting room” — у множині

Невизначені займенники також використовуються для позначення групи людей або предметів, наприклад:

• “Everybody has a job to do”

Їх також можна використовувати, щоб поставити питання, наприклад:

• “Which one do you like?”

Вживання неозначених займенників

Неозначені займенники some та any вживаються перед іменником у множині або незлічуваним іменником і перекладаються як «кілька», «дехто», «деякий», «який-небудь», «скільки-небудь» тощо:

• There was a book and some pens on the desk, but there wasn’t any chalk — На парті була книжка та кілька ручок, але не було крейди

Як правило, у стверджувальних реченнях використовують some, а в питальних і заперечних (або в таких, які містять заперечення) — any

В умовних реченнях, як правило, вживають any:

• If you have any questions on the subject, ask your teacher for help — Якщо у вас є які-небудь запитання, зверніться по допомогу до вчителя

У пропозиціях, проханнях і запрошеннях зазвичай вживається some:

• Would you like some tea? — Чи не хотіли би ви (випити) трохи чаю?
• Could you bring me some water? — Ви не могли би принести трохи води?

У стверджувальних реченнях any вживається в тих випадках, коли мають на увазі будь-який предмет чи особу:

• Please, take any book you like.— Візьми, будь ласка, будь-яку книжку, яку хочеш.

Складні неозначені займенники, утворені на основі some та any (somebody, someone — хтось, хто-небудь, something — щось, anybody, anyone — хто небудь, anything — що небудь), вживаються за правилами, викладеними вище:

• Is there anybody in the room? — Чиє хто-небудь у кімнаті?
• Somebody knocked at the door — Хтось постукав у двері

Займенники somebody, anybody, someone, anyone, one мають два відмінки: називний і родовий. Some в основному використовується в стверджувальних реченнях, тоді як any використовується в заперечних і питальних реченнях

• We spread down some wide blankets
• But his chief trouble was that he did not know any editors or writers
• Do you see any sign of his appreciating beauty?
• If you have any new books, show them to me please

При вживанні з іменниками some і any мають значення невизначеної кількості

• Now run along and get some candy, and don’t forget to give some to your brothers and sisters

Some, not any, використовується в спеціальних і загальних питаннях, що виражають певне прохання чи пропозицію

• “Do you want some water?” “No, I don’t want any water.”

Some значення «певний» перед іменником у множині.

• You have some queer customers. Do you like this life?

Any  може використовуватися в стверджувальних реченнях зі значенням «кожен».

• Above a square-domed forehead he saw a mop of brown hair… nut-brown, with a wave to it and hints of curls that were a delight to any woman…

Somebody, someone, somethingвживається в основному в стверджувальних реченнях

• He wanted someone young, you know a dark Spanish type…
• I want to say something

Anybody, anyone, anything вживаються в заперечних і питальних реченнях, а також в умовних реченнях

• I don’t want anything
• Is there anything between him and Annette?
• If anyone had asked him if he wanted to own her soul, the ques­tion would have seemed to him both ridiculous and sentimental
• If Erik was ever to do anything of importance he would have to find a third way

Somebody, someone, something вживаються в спеціальних і загальних питаннях, якщо виражають якесь прохання чи пропозицію.

• Will someone help me?

Anyone, anybody, anything можна вживати стверджувальних реченнях. Anyone, anybody вживаються зі значенням “кожен”; anything вживається зі значенням «усе» (що завгодно).

• “You’ve no business to say such a thing!” she exclaimed. “Why not? Anybody can see it.”
• There is a limit to what anyone can bear
• … she sank in spirit inwardly and fluttered feebly at the heart as she thought of entering anyone of these mighty concerns and asking for something to do — something that she could do — anything

Неозначені займенники some і any можуть використовуватися як subject, object та attribute.

• Some say the world will end in fire
• Some say in ice. (Frost) (SUBJECT)
• “I watch the fire — and the boiling and the roasting — ” “When there is any,” says Mr. George, with great expression (SUBJECT)
• … and his attention slid at once from such finality to the dust motes in the bluish sunlight coming in. Thrusting his hand up he tried to catch some (OBJECT)
• Where is his home? He didn’t have any. (OBJECT)
• Are there any real Indians in the woods? (ATTRI­BUTE)

Someone, anyone, somebody, anybody, something, anything можуть використовуватися як subject, predicative, або object. Коли вони використовуються як підмет, то дієслова вживаються в однині.

• In the next house someone was playing over and over again “La donna e mobile” on an untuned piano (SUB­JECT)
• … What he likes is anything except art (PREDICA­TIVE)
• And not merely did he not know any writers, but he did not know anybody who had ever attempted to write (OBJECT)

Somebody, someone, anybody, anyone вживаються з дієсловом із займенниками в однині.

• Someone has spilt their coffee on the carpet.

Займенники у родовому відмінок: somebody, someone, anybody, anyone, можуть вживатися як означення:

• … he could pull his cap down over his eyes and screen himself behind someone’s shoulder
• “It’s anybody’s right,” Martin heard somebody saying
• … I looked up; I was in somebody’s arms

Займенники somebody, someone, something, anybody, anyone, anything можуть вживатися як прийменникові непрямі відмінки.

• The girl doesn’t belong to anybody — is no use to anybody but me
• Such a purse had never been carried by anyone attentive to her
• So, though he wasn’t very successful at anything, he got along all right

Неозначено-особовий займенник one часто вживається у значенні будь-яка особа або кожна особа.

• New York presents so many temptations for one to run into ex­travagance

Неозначений займенник one часто вживається в загальному значенні.

• … Only one with constitution of iron could have held himself down, as Martin did

Займенник one може вживатися в родовому відмінку:

• I know exactly what it feels like to be held down on one’s back

One може використовуватися як слово-замінник:

• I was looking at them, and also at intervals examining the teach­ers — none of whom precisely pleased me; for the stout one was a little coarse, the dark one not a little fierce

One можна вживати у множині:

• Some of the gentlemen were gone to the stables; the younger ones, together with the younger ladies, were playing billiards in the billiard room.
