Present Simple is one of the most important tenses in English. It is essential to master because it is used in everyday communication, describing habits, schedules, facts, and general truths.

When is Present Simple used?

  1. To express regular actions, habits, or routines:
    • I go to school every day.
    • She drinks coffee in the morning.
  2. To state general truths and facts:
    • The Earth orbits the Sun.
    • Water boils at 100 degrees Celsius.
  3. For schedules, timetables, and programs:
    • The train leaves at 8 a.m.
    • The shop opens at 9 a.m.
  4. For instructions, recipes, and sports commentaries:
    • You mix the flour and sugar first.
    • He passes the ball to the striker!

Present Simple Structure

1. Affirmative Sentences:

  • I/You/We/They + base verb (go, like, play)
  • He/She/It + base verb + -s/-es (goes, likes, plays)

Examples:

  • I work in an office.
  • She works in a hospital.

2. Negative Sentences:

  • I/You/We/They do not (don’t) + base verb
  • He/She/It does not (doesn’t) + base verb

Examples:

  • I don’t like winter.
  • He doesn’t eat meat.

3. Interrogative Sentences:

  • Do I/you/we/they + base verb?
  • Does he/she/it + base verb?

Examples:

  • Do you speak English?
  • Does she like ice cream?

Time Markers for Present Simple

Common time markers used with Present Simple:

  • never
  • every day/week/month
  • on Mondays, in the morning

Examples:
